Sweet success for son of Authorized

Sugar Boy runs out the game winner of the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown, now heads for the Irish Derby

Authorized’s three-year-old son Sugar Boy rounded off his juvenile campaign in superb fashion last year, winning the Listed Eyrefield Stakes by no fewer than six and a half lengths. Having made a pleasing seasonal debut earlier this month when third in the G3 Ballysax Stakes, the progressive colt looked to have earned himself a further step up in class when recording a gutsy victory in the G3 Classic Trial at Sandown on 26 April.

Setting the pace from the off under jockey Chris Hayes, Sugar Boy was headed by favourite Eye Of The Storm once entering the final two furlongs but battled back impressively to retake the lead and win the ten-furlong contest by a neck. He will now be aimed at the Irish Derby, due to take place at The Curragh on 29 June.

Bred by Grangecon Stud, Sugar Boy is out of the Group-winning Danehill mare Steel Princess, making him a three-parts brother to G1 Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx.

Authorized is now the only European stallion to have sired more than one three-year-old Group winner this year, following Rehn’s Nest’s victory in the G3 Park Express Stakes late last month.

Authorized stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £7,000 October 1st SLF.
