War Machine became the third G1 winner for Harry Angel (IRE) when he scored a brilliant victory on Saturday, 14 June in the time-honoured Stradbroke Handicap over 1,400m at Eagle Farm.
The athletic four-year-old travelled three-wide with cover until the 500m mark before jockey Tim Clark swooped around the leaders and sprinted clear in Queensland’s signature race.
War Machine, who won the Listed Bendigo Guineas 1,300m last year and last month’s G3 BRC Sprint over 1,350m at Doomben, beat the fast-finishing Yellow Brick by three-quarters of a length with Private Eye a length away in third place in a fast 1 minute 21.17 seconds.
Formerly trained by the late Mike Moroney and now with Ben, Will and J.D. Hayes at Flemington, War Machine joined Tom Kitten and Private Harry as G1 winners sired by Harry Angel.
Out of the Australian mare Caserta, War Machine was bred by MDJ Bloodstock Ltd and passed in at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Sale in 2022.
The gelding has now recorded six wins and four placings from just 13 starts, boosting his prize-money earnings to a massive $2,480,010.
A dual G1 winner on the track with a lofty Timeform rating of 132, Harry Angel is the youngest stallion in the top-10 stallions’ prize-money list in Australia.
Since retiring to stud in 2019, Harry Angel has sired 208 winners of 485 races worldwide – including 20 Stakes-race winners of 33 Black-Type events.
