Blue-eyed boy: Dubawi

The son of a superstar and a Classic winner, Dubawi was born to succeed: it’s what he did on the racecourse and what he continues to do at stud

Tough constitution and a great will to win. There aren’t too many owners, breeders or trainers who would complain if that was the description given to their horse.

It is in fact how Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson describes the offspring of Dubawi.

We don’t need to take his word for it: the facts are there for all to see. Since the start of the Pattern in 1971 no other stallion has made a more instant impact at stud than Dubawi. In two years, his first two crops garnered 11 Group winners, with his outstanding 2,000 Guineas-winning son Makfi in the vanguard.

In 2009 and 2010 he boasted a Stakes winners to runners ratio of 10.6%, with Shamardal on 9.9%, Oasis Dream 9.7%, Galileo 9.5% and Sadler’s Wells 9.3%. His highest achievers are his seven Group or Grade One winners in Britain, America, Australia, France, Germany, South Africa and Hong Kong: Makfi, Poet’s Voice, Dubawi Heights, Secret Admirer, Waldpark, Happy Archer and Lucky Nine (formerly known as Luck Or Design).

Much has been made of the success of the Dubawi - Green Desert cross, and indeed Makfi and Lucky Nine are both out of Green Desert mares, as is dual 2,000 Guineas runner-up Dubawi Gold and Listed winner Zubbaya, while Poet’s Voice is out of a mare by another Danzig stallion, Chief’s Crown.

Rahy mares have also produced some notable performers by Dubawi, with Worthadd, his dual Italian Classic winner and Lockinge Stakes runner-up, and Havane Smoker, runner-up in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

One glance at Dubawi’s outstanding book of mares for 2011 can leave us in no doubt that his run of success will be continued for years to come. Among those to have visited him at Dalham Hall Stud this year are the G1 winners Aquarelliste, Chinese White, Crystal Music, Ghanaati, Gossamer, Maids Causeway, Majestic Roi, Passage Of Time, Petrushka, Playful Act, Porto Roca, Rebelline, Royal Highness, Sand Springs and Speciosa.

Also in the line-up are the dams of G1 winners Awzaan, VRC Derby winner Benicio, King’s Apostle, Lily Of The Valley, Makfi, Naaqoos, Nahoodh, Saddex, Silver Frost, Stacelita, Street Sense and Zafeen.

A blue-chip stallion deserves blue-hen mares.
