Son of Teofilo wins G1 Queensland Derby

A day after his daughter Tarfasha was a brave second in the G1 Oaks at Epsom, Teofilo landed his sixth G1 winner when Sonntag, a three-year-old from his first southern hemisphere-bred crop, won the G1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm, June 7.

Still a maiden at the start of this preparation, Sonntag has improved dramatically under the guidance of young trainer Henry Dwyer. After jumping well in the 12f feature, jockey Chad Schofield positioned Sonntag in behind the leaders. He came to the centre of the track after turning for home and wore down his rivals to win by a neck.

Bred by Darley, Sonntag is the first foal of metropolitan-winning Strategic mare Parfaits, a half-sister to Stakes winner Ice Cream Sundae, the dam of G1 winner Flavour.

Sonntag is the second Derby winner for Teofilo whose son Trading Leather won the G1 Irish Derby last year, while his other G1 winners are Parish Hall, Havana Gold, Voleuse De Coeurs and Loch Garman.
