Sixth G1 winner for Exceed And Excel

Guelph emulates her mother in G1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes triumph

Guelph became her sire Exceed And Excel’s sixth G1 winner, coming with a withering run down the centre of the track to claim the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes over 7f at Randwick, April 13.

After putting the writing on the wall with a fast finishing fourth behind fellow Exceed And Excel filly Overreach seven days earlier in the G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill, Guelph relished the extra 200m and, despite travelling wide for the majority of the race, was too strong for her rivals. Overreach was gallant in defeat, collared in the final few strides and finishing third.

In winning, Guelph emulated her mother Camarilla, who won the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes in 2007.

Trained by Peter Snowden and ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Guelph is expected to give Exceed And Excel a chance of making it a clean sweep of Sydney’s two-year-old G1 races by lining up in the G1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick in two weeks.

The win was a big boost for Darley’s two exciting young stallions in Sepoy and Helmet, who combined won seven G1 races, as Guelph has close ties to both horses. Like Helmet, Guelph is by Exceed And Excel and she is closely related to Sepoy through her female family.

A homebred for Darley, Guelph is the second foal of Camarilla, who like her daughter was also a winner of the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield. Camarilla was out of G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena, a sister to Watchful, the dam of four-time G1 winner Sepoy.

Camarilla unfortunately died last Spring, however her colt foal by Street Cry survived and she also has a yearling colt by Shamardal.

The track record holder over 1400m at Caulfield, Exceed And Excel is the sire of 69 Stakes winners worldwide including G1 winners Helmet, Overreach, Excelebration, Margot Did and Reward For Effort.

Exceed And Excel is standing at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £35,000 October 1st SLF, Sepoy also stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £15,000, while Helmet stands at Kildangan Stud at a fee of €10,000.
