Shirocco juvenile sets new record at Arqana

Colt by Darley first-season sire sells for €300,000; sons of Shamardal and Iffraaj bought for €210,000 and €135,000 respectively

The Arqana Breeze Up Sale, held on 15 May at Saint-Cloud, proved hugely successful for the Darley stallions with a colt by first-season sire Shirocco selling for a record price of €300,000.

Consigned by Yeomanstown Stud, the bay colt is out of the Listed winner and G3-placed Basse Besogne, herself a daughter of three-time G1 winner Baiser Vole. He was bought by Fiona Shaw on behalf of Earle Mack.

The previous record for the sale was €270,000, paid last year by Paul Nataf for a first-crop son of Darley's leading young sire Dubawi. Now named Dubawi Junior, the colt broke his maiden by an astounding 11 lengths earlier this year.

The second highest price of the sale was €210,000, paid by the Chantilly Bloodstock Agency for a colt by last year’s champion first-season sire Shamardal. Offered for sale by Haras du Saubouas, he is out of the G3-placed Generous mare Samerous, a half-sister to G2 winner Samando.

Iffraaj, who like Shirocco has his first two-year-olds this year, also featured in the high prices of the day when David Redvers went to €135,000 to secure Bansha House Stables’ colt out of Listed winner Jezebel. He will now join Sir Mark Prescott's Stable and will race for Pearl Bloodstock.
