Shamal Wind surges for Oakleigh Plate win

Daughter of Dubawi becomes her sires 17th G1 winner

A last start winner at Listed level when resuming from a break, five-year-old Dubawi mare Shamal Wind displayed her trademark finishing burst to become the 17th G1 winner for her sire when claiming the G1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield, Australia.

Jumping away from a wide gate, jockey Dwayne Dunn allowed the mare to settle with only a few runners behind her and with the fast pace set up front, Shamal Wind was always going to get every opportunity to charge late.

One of the widest down the home straight, the mare unleased her powerful sprint and charged as the leaders started to weaken, taking the race by three-quarters-of-a-length.

Bred by Widden Stud Australia Pty Ltd and Mark Edwards, Shamal Wind is out of the Machiavellian mare Firemaid, a half-sister to the Listed French Stakes winner Bezrin and to the dam of Dubawi's G2 Rockfel Stakes winner Al Thakhira.

The sire of 84 Stakes winners highlighted by 17 at G1 level, Dubawi stands at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of £125,000 October 1st SLF alongside his G1-winning son Poet's Voice who stands at £12,000 October 1st SLF.
