Fourth G1 winner for New Approach

Sultanina lands the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, with Narniyn (Dubawi) second

The feature race on the final day of Glorious Goodwood was the G1 Nassau Stakes and the result could not have been better for the Darley stallions as New Approach’s four-year-old daughter Sultanina outbattled Narniyn (Dubawi) to become the fourth winner at the highest level for her sire.

Sultanina, trained by the in-form John Gosden, was settled off the early pace dictated by Venus de Milo, with Narniyn in a handy position on the rail. As the field quickened for home, the Dubawi filly looked to have a strong change but a fantastic late burst of speed from Sultanina saw her sweep past her rivals to win by a length and a half.

This was her third win in four starts, having made a successful debut in May of this year before swiftly stepping up in class to win the G3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock later the same month. Sultanina was second in the G2 Lancashire Oaks on her last start.

Owned and bred by Philippa Cooper’s Normandie Stud, Sultanina is the first foal to race out of the Stakes-winning Zafonic mare Soft Centre, herself a daughter of multiple Stakes winner Foodbroker Fancy (who is by the now retired Darley stallion Halling).

New Approach is also sire of four-time G1 winner Dawn Approach, now standing at Kildangan Stud, plus Oaks winner Talent. May’s Dream, who won this year’s Australasian Oaks, completes his line-up of G1 winners.
