100 Stakes winners for Cape Cross

Talmada’s win in the John Musker Fillies’ Stakes a milestone victory for her remarkable sire

Cape Cross is already enjoying an outstanding season, thanks in no small part to his triple G1 winner and Derby hero Golden Horn, and on 16 September his daughter Talmada added the cherry on the cake when she became his 100th career Stakes winner.

Settled off the pace early in the ten-furlong contest, Talmada began to weave her way through the pack under William Buick before laying down her challenge in the home straight. The Roger Varian-trained filly then outbattled Shamardal’s daughter Speedy Boarding in impressive fashion to prevail by half a length and add a first Black type win to her record.

Talmada, who races in the colour of Sheikh Ahmed al Maktoum, is out of the winning Galileo mare Aryaamm – also dam of G2 Champagne Stake winner Saamidd (by late Darley stallion Street Cry). Talmada’s third dam is the great producer Brocade, dam of Barathea and Gossamer.

Cape Cross now joins an elite group of just over 40 stallions (of whom just 11 are still active) ever to have sired 100 Stakes winners – together with Exceed And Excel who reached his century earlier this year.
